There are few spectacles in the Caribbean quite like Grouper Moon. Each winter, around the full moon, thousands of Nassau grouper leave their usual reef territories and travel to a traditional spawning site off Little Cayman. For several nights, these normally solitary fish gather in extraordinary numbers to take part in one of the ocean’s most important—and increasingly rare—natural events.

This annual gathering is also at the heart of one of the Caribbean’s most encouraging marine-conservation success stories: the Grouper Moon Project.

What Is the Grouper Moon Project?

The Grouper Moon Project is a long-running conservation and research partnership between the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) and the Cayman Islands Department of Environment, with researchers from institutions including Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and Oregon State University.

Since 2002, research teams have returned to the Cayman Islands each winter to monitor and study Nassau grouper spawning aggregations. Although work has also taken place around Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, Little Cayman remains the project’s principal focus and is home to the largest known reproductive spawning aggregation of the species.

The project began at a critical moment. An aggregation of approximately 7,000 Nassau grouper was documented near Little Cayman in 2001. The concentration of so many fish in one predictable location made them especially vulnerable to fishing, and the aggregation was rapidly overfished. In response, the Cayman Islands Government introduced protections for spawning sites. Those early measures, strengthened over time and supported by more than two decades of scientific research, have helped the population recover.

Why Do Nassau Grouper Gather Beneath the Winter Moon?

For most of the year, Nassau grouper live relatively solitary lives among coral reefs. During the winter spawning season, however, mature fish travel—sometimes over considerable distances—to gather at the same traditional locations used by generations before them.

In the days following a winter full moon, the aggregation grows. As spawning approaches, the grouper become more active and may display dramatic changes in color. After sunset, females rise rapidly through the water with several males in pursuit, releasing eggs and sperm into the open ocean. Fertilized eggs then drift with the currents, beginning the next generation’s uncertain journey back to the reef.

Researchers have found that eggs released at Little Cayman can return to reefs elsewhere around the island, demonstrating how protecting one spawning site can support the wider marine ecosystem.

Science Beneath the Surface

Every year, the Grouper Moon team collects information that helps scientists understand the health, behavior and future of the Nassau grouper population. Divers count and measure fish, document spawning behavior and use a growing range of research tools to follow their movements and reproductive success.

Over the years, the project has expanded to include acoustic tagging, genetics, juvenile-habitat studies, ocean-current research and underwater soundscape monitoring. Scientists have even tracked clouds of fertilized eggs using specialized underwater technology to learn where currents carry them after spawning.

This long-term approach matters. A single season offers only a snapshot; more than two decades of consistent monitoring reveal trends. The results have contributed to over 20 scientific publications and provided the evidence needed to guide practical conservation decisions.

A Caribbean Conservation Success Story

Nassau grouper were once common throughout the Caribbean, but their instinct to return to predictable spawning sites made them especially easy to target. Many historic aggregation sites across the region are now depleted or inactive, and the species is considered endangered.

Little Cayman tells a more hopeful story. Research published in 2020 documented the recovery of Nassau grouper populations in the Cayman Islands following targeted conservation action. The comeback demonstrates what can happen when scientists, government, residents, conservation organizations and local businesses work together over the long term.

Current Cayman Islands regulations provide a closed season for Nassau grouper from December 1 through April 30, protecting the fish during the period when they gather to reproduce. The scientific findings of the Grouper Moon Project have been central to developing and strengthening protections such as these.

Bringing Grouper Moon Into the Classroom

The project’s impact reaches far beyond the research team. Through the Grouper Education Program, students in the Cayman Islands and elsewhere can connect with scientists working in the field. Live video conversations, underwater broadcasts, lesson plans and virtual field trips turn Little Cayman’s reefs into a living classroom.

Students learn not only about grouper biology, but also about the ecological, economic and cultural importance of a healthy fish population. They see conservation as an active process—one built on observation, evidence, cooperation and patience.

Little Cayman’s Role in Protecting the Reef
